The short definition
An LMS delivers teaching and keeps the record of it. Everything else — a video call link, a WhatsApp group, a folder of PDFs — solves one slice of that and leaves the record scattered. If a system cannot tell you, for one named student, which classes they attended, what they submitted, and what they scored, it is not a learning management system.
What every LMS should contain
Vendors describe these differently, but the functional list is stable across schools, universities and coaching centres.

- A material library: notes, slides, recordings, gated by enrolment
- Assignments and quizzes with submission, marking and feedback

- Roles and permissions, so a student never sees staff-only data
What an LMS often doesn't cover — and why that hurts
Most LMS products stop at teaching. Fees, receipts, payment chasing, teacher payouts and expenses live in a spreadsheet or a separate accounting tool, so the same student is typed into two systems and the numbers drift. Platforms that cover both are usually described as an education ERP.
