LMS features checklist: what to demand in a demo

Feature lists on vendor sites are written to be true, not useful. This checklist is grouped by the job it does, with the question that separates a real implementation from a screenshot.

1. Class delivery

Ask: can you schedule a recurring class per batch, join it from inside the platform, and find the recording afterwards without anyone uploading it manually?

  • Recurring schedule per batch or course
  • Live sessions (HTS-LMS uses Zoom) launched from the class page
  • Automatic recording capture and filing (HTS-LMS files to Google Drive)
  • Recordings gated by enrolment, not by an unlisted link

2. Attendance

Ask: after a term, can you show one student's attendance percentage and the exact sessions they missed, without exporting anything?

  • Per-session marking and later correction with an audit trail
  • Per-student attendance percentage computed automatically
  • Visible to parents, if you want it to be

3. Assessment and marking

Ask: who marks, how does work get to them, and what does the student receive back?

  • Assignments and quizzes with in-platform submission
  • Scores, written remarks and annotated file returns
  • Delegation to teaching or teacher assistants, with capacity limits
  • A return deadline measured in days after the due date

4. Fees and money

Ask: what happens automatically when a fee goes unpaid for a week?

  • Monthly invoices and receipts per student
  • Pending and overdue states tracked without a manual pass
  • Automatic reminders before due, after due and on a repeating overdue cadence
  • Teacher revenue share and payouts computed from collected fees
  • Expense records so the month's numbers are complete

5. Roles, access and privacy

Ask: is a permission enforced in the database, or only hidden in the interface? In HTS-LMS, row-level security means a parent cannot read another child's record and an assistant only opens work explicitly assigned to them, even if they guess a URL.

6. Onboarding and exit

Ask for a time-boxed trial with your own students, and ask what an export looks like on the day you leave. A vendor that cannot answer the second question is a risk regardless of the feature list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most-skipped feature in LMS demos?
Overdue fee handling. Demos show an invoice being paid; almost none show what the system does on its own when it isn't.
How long should an LMS evaluation take?
A week with a trial account is usually enough if you commit to running one real batch through it end to end rather than clicking around sample data.
